iPad / iOS 4.2 Beta 2 issue

iOS 4.2 Beta 2 was released yesterday.  I was very excited to get this installed as I had been running the first beta for I think just about 2 weeks.  It's been a great boost to usability just from the perspective of having folders.  I had literally I think about 10 pages of icons that I collapsed down into two pages.  So much easier to use.  However, there were some bugs.  Several apps that I just got would crash quite hard.  VLC player had audio but no sound.  Hence the desire to see if Beta 2 would help out with this issue.

So I downloaded it last night and installed it this morning, and low and behold my iPad was bricked.  After the OS restore, it could not activate, and iTunes was telling me that I needed to register the iPad in the developer portal.  This involved two problems:

  1. I hadn't registered it before, so I wasn't sure where to do it in the portal (and the portal design for this isn't intuitive to find it IMHO)
  2. How could I get the UUID for the iPad if I was stuck on the activation screen?
Well, some hunting and googling gave me the answers so I thought I'd share.
  1. This is the link to the page to register your devices: https://developer.apple.com/ios/manage/devices/index.action
  2. The following is how to get your UUID via a backup on your mac (I assume similar for a PC, but I don't have one)
First I'll give credit to Michael Terretta for figuring this out.  I got the answer here: http://michael.terretta.com/how-to-find-ipad-or-iphone-device-id-udid-whe

Basically, in your home folder open up ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync.  You should see some folders with 40 digit filenames.  Just copy the filename of your for the folder representing your iPad as that is the UUID, register it in the portal at the link in #1, wait a minute or so, plug the iPad back in, and you should activate just fine.

Thanks M.T.!
